An independent, open archive and commentary blog on the philosophy of mind, perception, and cognitive science.

Art & Mind preserves a small set of foundational papers on consciousness, attention, and perception, and pairs them with original commentary on the questions they raise. It is an independent project — not affiliated with any university, journal, or publisher — maintained by a single editor with a long-standing interest in the field.

The domain art-mind.org has a long history as a home for philosophy-of-mind material, and several of the texts archived here have been referenced from that address for many years. The aim of this project is simply to keep those references working, readable, and surrounded by useful context.

What you'll find here

The Papers Archive holds reference copies of canonical texts, each with a full citation and a link to the original source where one exists. The Commentary section is a slowly-growing set of essays: close readings, background, and connections between classic arguments and current debates.

Where it's going

The questions at the centre of this field — what perception represents, how features are bound into objects, whether consciousness can be fully explained — are no longer asked only about human and animal minds. They are increasingly being asked about artificial systems. Over time, the commentary here will widen to examine how these classical ideas bear on contemporary computational and machine-learning models of cognition, treating that as a natural continuation of the same inquiry rather than a separate subject.
